Updated: Jan 24

A board foot is a unit of measurement for the volume of lumber. It is used to measure rough lumber (before drying and planing). The formula used to calculate this measurement is Thickness x Width x Length / 12. For example, a 1x8x8 would measure out to 5 BdFt.

Can you scale logs for Board Footage?

While you can scale logs for a rough estimate of how much volume your log or pile of logs will yield, bear in mind it's not always perfectly accurate. Factors that could cause your estimates to be off include blade kerf, defects, and log shape. In general, it can yield an approximation of what you have and what you can do with them.

Why is it used?

It is used as a precise measurement among the lumber industry; it ensures consistency and uniformity among all types of lumber. When buying lumber from sawyers, it allows you to acquire the proper materials you need through using the same terminology. Learning this measurement can make all your DIY projects go more smoothly, as it ensures seamless understanding between the supplier and the consumer.
